False-colour TEM of hepatitis B virus particles

False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) particles, the cause of serum hepatitis. Here, the large spheres (known as Dane particles) are the complete virus, with coat and core visible in some examples. Typically HBV occurs in clusters of 3 types of particles (as seen here): the virus itself; smaller spheres and rod-shaped forms made from the protein coat of the virus. These smaller non- infectious particles are antigenically identical to HBV and thus provide raw material for vaccines. Hepatitis B is transmitted sexually & via infected blood. Magnification: x22, 000 at 6x7cm size. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © CNRI/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases a false-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of hepatitis B virus particles, the notorious cause of serum hepatitis. The image reveals an intricate world within our bodies that is both fascinating and alarming. The large spheres depicted in this TEM are known as Dane particles, representing the complete virus with its coat and core visible in some instances. What makes this image even more intriguing is the presence of three types of particles clustered together: the actual virus itself, smaller spheres, and rod-shaped forms made from the protein coat. Interestingly, these smaller non-infectious particles share identical antigens with HBV, making them valuable raw material for vaccine development. They hold immense potential to combat this infectious disease that spreads through sexual contact and infected blood. At a magnification level of x22,000 on a 6x7cm size print, we gain an unprecedented insight into the microscopic realm where viruses thrive. This photograph not only serves as a reminder of the complexity and resilience of viral life but also highlights the importance of scientific research in understanding and combating diseases like hepatitis B. Captured by Science Photo Library's talented team, this stunning visual representation merges artistry with science to deliver a powerful message about virology, biology, and public health concerns surrounding hepatitis B.
