False colour TEM of influenza virus budding

False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of influenza viruses (orange) budding from the surface of an infected cell. Influenza is very contagious. It belongs to the orthomyxovirus group. It consists of a core of ribonucleic acid (RNA), surrounded by a spiked protein envelope. These spikes adhere to host cells when the virus is spread. The virus has an affinity for mucus, and is transmitted by coughed or sneezed droplets which are inhaled into another respiratory tract. Influenza infection is usually short-lived. The spikes of the virus, however, can change their structure creating a new influenza strain. Magnification x17, 150 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of influenza viruses in the process of budding from an infected cell. The vibrant orange hue highlights the intricate structure and contagious nature of these viruses. Belonging to the orthomyxovirus group, influenza is notorious for its ability to rapidly spread among individuals. The image reveals that influenza consists of a core made up of ribonucleic acid (RNA), encased within a spiked protein envelope. These spikes play a crucial role in adhering to host cells during viral transmission. Influenza has a particular affinity for mucus, making it highly transmissible through coughed or sneezed droplets that are then inhaled into another person's respiratory tract. Although influenza infection typically lasts for a short duration, this photo emphasizes the virus's adaptability and potential danger. The spikes on its surface can undergo structural changes, leading to the emergence of new strains with different characteristics. At magnification x17,150 and printed at 6x7cm size, this TEM image offers us an unprecedented glimpse into the microscopic world of virology and biology. It serves as a reminder not only of the beauty found within scientific research but also highlights the importance of understanding and combating infectious diseases like influenza. This remarkable photograph is brought to you by Science Photo Library – your gateway into exploring various aspects of viruses' behavior without commercial intent.
