Fly agaric mushrooms in wood

The common mushroom known as Fly agaric, Amanita muscaria, photographed in woodland. The cap (8-20cm across) is covered with white pyramidal warts which may be washed off by rain. The cap is globose or hemispherical at first and then flattens in the mature stage shown here. Fly agaric has strong hallucinogenic and intoxicant properties. The central nervous system is affected and the muscles of the intoxicated person start to pull and twitch convulsively. However, the effects of this mushroom are unpredictable depending on the concentration of the toxic agent (ibotenic acid). Photographed in Wiltshire, England

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of Fly agaric mushrooms in their natural habitat. The dense woodland setting provides a perfect backdrop for these enchanting fungi to thrive. With its cap measuring between 8-20cm across, the Fly agaric displays an intriguing pattern of white pyramidal warts that can be easily washed away by raindrops. As this photograph reveals, the mushroom starts off with a globose or hemispherical shape and gradually flattens as it matures. However, what makes this species truly fascinating is its potent hallucinogenic and intoxicating properties. Consuming these mushrooms can have profound effects on the central nervous system, causing convulsive twitches and involuntary muscle contractions in those under its influence. Yet, despite its reputation for inducing altered states of consciousness, the exact impact of Fly agaric remains unpredictable due to variations in ibotenic acid concentration within each specimen. This unpredictability adds an element of mystery to these already captivating organisms. Captured in Wiltshire, England by Science Photo Library's talented photographers, this image not only highlights the natural beauty found within our world but also serves as a reminder of nature's ability to both fascinate and surprise us with its diverse offerings.
