Two fossil trilobites from Devonian period

Trilobites. Two well-preserved fossil trilobites from the Devonian era (408-360 million years ago). The dorsal exoskeleton of each trilobite is clearly visible as ridges running across the top of the fossil. This is divided into three parts by longitudinal furrows. The head (at left for top trilobite and at right for lower trilobite) has the eyes of the animal clearly differentiated. The trilobites are an extinct group of once common marine arthropods. Most species are thought to have lived on the sea floor like modern day crabs. Their flexible backs allowed them to roll up into a tight ball when being attacked by predators

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases two fossil trilobites from the Devonian period, which existed approximately 408-360 million years ago. The intricate details of these well-preserved specimens are truly remarkable. The dorsal exoskeleton of each trilobite is clearly visible, adorned with ridges that run across the top of the fossil. These ridges are divided into three parts by longitudinal furrows, adding to their unique beauty. The head of each trilobite is particularly fascinating, as it displays distinct eyes that were once a vital part of their anatomy. Trilobites belong to an extinct group of marine arthropods that were once abundant in ancient oceans. Similar to modern-day crabs, most species are believed to have inhabited the sea floor. One intriguing feature about these creatures was their ability to protect themselves when faced with predators. Their flexible backs allowed them to roll up into a tight ball for defense purposes—a clever adaptation that ensured their survival in a harsh and competitive environment. As we admire this extraordinary image captured by Science Photo Library, we gain insight into Earth's prehistoric past and marvel at the diversity and complexity of life forms that have come before us.
