Frederick I Barbarossa Holy Roman Emperor

Frederick I Barbarossa (1122-1190), King of Germany and Holy Roman Emperor. Born in Swabia in southern Germany, Frederick succeeded his father as Duke in 1147. Soon after this he went on the Second Crusade and despite its failure Frederick proved himself and won the confidence of the King of Gemany, Conrad III. When Conrad died, Frederick was himself elected King. Frederick undertook expeditions into Italy and was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Adrian IV. Frederick spent much of his reign brokering compromises between the German monarchy and the Italian states over the power and position of the Papacy which had previously tended to end in battle. To appease the Pope, Frederick went on the Third Crusade, but he drowned whilst bathing in the Saleph River. This woodcut comes from Giovios Elogia vivorum bellica virtute illustrium, publised at Basle in 1596

EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodcut print showcases the formidable figure of Frederick I Barbarossa, a renowned Holy Roman Emperor and King of Germany during the 12th century. Born in Swabia, southern Germany, Frederick's journey to power was marked by his successful participation in the Second Crusade, which earned him the trust and support of Conrad III, the King of Germany. Following Conrad's death, Frederick ascended to the throne as King and later became crowned as Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Adrian IV after undertaking expeditions into Italy. Throughout his reign, he skillfully mediated between German monarchy and Italian states to resolve conflicts over papal authority that had often resulted in violent clashes. To demonstrate his commitment to appeasing the Pope, Frederick embarked on the Third Crusade; however, tragedy struck when he tragically drowned while bathing in the Saleph River. Despite this untimely demise, Frederick left an indelible mark as a diplomat and conqueror who tirelessly worked towards maintaining peace within his empire. This monochrome woodcut print from Giovios Elogia vivorum bellica virtute illustrium (published in Basle in 1596) beautifully captures both the regality and strength exuded by this iconic ruler. It serves as a poignant reminder of an era known for its tumultuous political landscape – an era where figures like Frederick I Barbarossa played pivotal roles shaping history during what is commonly referred to as "the Dark Ages.
