Frog tadpole

Frog tadpole. Close-up of a two-day-old tadpole of the common frog (Rana temporaria), showing its gills (frond-like, upper left). This is the external gill stage. The gills are feathery and present a large surface for the uptake of oxygen. The head also shows an eye pit (dark spot, upper left). The mouth has not yet broken through but below it is a horseshoe shaped sucker (two bulges, below the head) for clinging to the jelly of the egg sac (not seen). The tadpole feeds on the internal yolk at this stage. At the end of the body is the prominent tail. This tadpole is approximately 10mm long

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the delicate beauty of a two-day-old tadpole belonging to the common frog species, Rana temporaria. The close-up shot showcases the intricate details of this amphibian's early development stage, specifically highlighting its gills and other remarkable features. The feathery gills, visible in the upper left corner, serve as a vital respiratory organ for oxygen uptake during this external gill stage. Additionally, an eye pit is noticeable nearby – a dark spot that hints at future visual capabilities. Although still enclosed within its jelly-like egg sac (not seen), this tiny creature exhibits signs of growth and adaptation. Just below its yet-to-be-formed mouth lies a horseshoe-shaped sucker with two bulges designed for clinging onto the protective casing. At this point in its life cycle, nourishment comes from consuming internal yolk reserves. Measuring approximately 10mm long, this juvenile tadpole possesses a prominent tail at one end – an essential appendage aiding in locomotion through water environments. Against a pristine white background, every detail becomes more pronounced and mesmerizing. This stunning image not only highlights the fascinating biological aspects of amphibian development but also serves as a testament to nature's incredible diversity and complexity. It offers viewers an opportunity to marvel at the wonders found within our natural world while igniting curiosity about these extraordinary creatures' journeys towards adulthood.
