Frozen trees and lake after a heavy snowfall. The tress at left are part of Abernethy Forest, and the ice at right is part of the frozen freshwater Loch Garten. The forest and loch are located in the Cairngorms National Park, in the Highland Region of Scotland. The trees are mainly the native Caledonian Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), but also include the silver birch (Betula pendula). Photographed in December

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the serene beauty of a winter wonderland in the Scottish Highlands. After a heavy snowfall, frozen trees and a glistening lake create an enchanting scene that seems straight out of a fairytale. The Abernethy Forest, with its native Caledonian Scots pine and silver birch trees, stands proudly on the left side of the image, their branches adorned with delicate frost. On the right side, part of Loch Garten is transformed into a solid sheet of ice, reflecting the wintry landscape like a mirror. Located within Cairngorms National Park, this picturesque corner of Scotland showcases nature's resilience in harsh weather conditions. The freezing temperatures have turned everything white, creating an ethereal atmosphere that evokes both tranquility and awe. As December blankets the region in snow, it highlights not only the biological diversity found here but also how meteorological forces shape our environment. This scenic view reminds us of Britain's diverse geography and serves as a reminder to appreciate our natural surroundings. It invites us to immerse ourselves in this rural escape where woodlands meet lakeshores and where every detail tells its own botanical story. This photograph by Science Photo Library encapsulates the magic found within these frozen landscapes without any mention or intention for commercial use; it simply celebrates nature's breathtaking artistry at its finest.
