Fusobacterium nucleatum bacterium

Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a transverse section through a Fusobacterium nucleatum bacterium. In this section the internal structures of the cell resemble a " face" : the " eyes" (blue) are intracellular granules; the " mouth" (red) contains cytoplasm and is shaped by a cell membrane. Many such membranes make up the cell wall. Fusobacterium nucleatum typically are long, anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria, tapered at both ends. They occur in the dental plaque that forms on the surface of teeth. These bacteria ferment carbohydrates to lactic acid; plaque is a cause of periodontal disease and tooth decay in humans. Magnification: x67, 200 at 6x4.5cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured transmission electron micrograph of a transverse section through a Fusobacterium nucleatum bacterium. What makes this image truly fascinating is the resemblance of the internal structures to a "face". The "eyes" depicted in blue, are intracellular granules, while the "mouth" shown in red, contains cytoplasm and takes shape from the cell membrane. This bacterium belongs to the long, anaerobic, rod-shaped bacterial group and is commonly found in dental plaque that forms on teeth surfaces. Fusobacterium nucleatum plays a significant role in oral health as it ferments carbohydrates into lactic acid. Unfortunately, when plaque accumulates due to these bacteria's presence, it becomes one of the leading causes of periodontal disease and tooth decay among humans. The magnification used for this photograph was x67 at 6x4.5cm size, allowing us to observe intricate details of this smiley-faced microbe. It serves as an excellent representation of bacteriology and microbiology studies. Science Photo Library has once again captured an extraordinary moment within nature's microscopic world with their exceptional photography skills. This image not only educates viewers about oral bacteria but also reminds us how even tiny organisms can have such profound impacts on our overall well-being.
