Gallio scorpion fossil C018 / 9406
Gallio scorpion fossil. Sandstone block containing a fossilised specimen of a Gallio scorpion. The scorpion is 6 centimetres long. This specimen dates from around 240 million years ago, during the Triassic. This fossil was found in the Voltzia sandstone quarries of the Vosges mountain range in northern France, and is part of the Grauvogel-Gall collection, held in Strasbourg, France. At this time, there was a large delta in what is now the Vosges region. Repeated sediment deposition and droughts led to the formation of fossils

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable Gallio scorpion fossil, preserved within a sandstone block. Measuring 6 centimetres in length, this ancient specimen dates back approximately 240 million years to the Triassic period. Discovered in the Voltzia sandstone quarries of the Vosges mountain range in northern France, it now resides within the prestigious Grauvogel-Gall collection held in Strasbourg. During this era, the Vosges region was characterized by a vast delta where repeated sediment deposition and droughts occurred, ultimately leading to the formation of fossils like this one. The exquisite detail captured in this studio shot allows us to marvel at its intricate features and gain insight into prehistoric wildlife. As we delve into its historical significance, we are transported back to an era when these arachnids roamed Europe's landscapes. This single fossil serves as a testament to our planet's rich biological past and enthralls both zoologists and paleontologists alike. The photograph itself is masterfully composed by Gilles Mermet from Science Photo Library. It beautifully captures every minute detail of this extraordinary find while highlighting its natural beauty against a backdrop of rock and stone. This image not only offers us an intimate glimpse into Earth's ancient history but also reminds us of the importance of preserving such invaluable specimens for future generations to appreciate and study.
