German rocket factory, 1943

Peenemunde rocket factory, Germany, 1943. Rocket tanks are seen in the foreground, the aft parts of the rockets are on the left, and the nose cones are in the background on the right. This site was used during World War II (1939-1945) to test the rockets developed by the team led by the German rocket scientists Wernher von Braun and Walter Dornberger. The testing site (the Heeresversuchsanstalt) had been established in 1937, and it was here that many of the basics principles of rocket technology were developed. Rockets developed here included the V-1 and V-2. The first V-2 (then called the A-4) flew on 3 October 1942

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1943, offering a glimpse into the German rocket factory known as Peenemunde. In this historical image, we are transported to a pivotal moment during World War II when groundbreaking advancements in rocket technology were being made. The foreground showcases an array of rocket tanks, while the left side reveals the aft parts of these powerful machines. On the right background, we catch sight of nose cones waiting to be integrated into their respective rockets. Peenemunde's significance cannot be overstated; it served as a crucial testing site for the brilliant team led by German rocket scientists Wernher von Braun and Walter Dornberger. Established in 1937 as Heeresversuchsanstalt, this facility became instrumental in developing fundamental principles that would shape future space flight and military weaponry. Among its notable achievements were the creation of two iconic rockets: V-1 and V-2. The first-ever flight of what was then called A-4 (later renamed V-2) occurred on October 3rd, 1942—a milestone that forever altered history. This monochrome snapshot not only captures a moment frozen in time but also symbolizes humanity's relentless pursuit of technological advancement amidst one of history's most tumultuous periods—the Second World War. It stands as a testament to Germany's engineering prowess and highlights how scientific research can intersect with military applications—an intersection that shaped our world throughout the twentieth century.
