Globular cluster M80

Globular cluster M80. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of the globular star cluster M80 (NGC 6093). This massive star cluster lies some 28, 000 light years away in the constellation Scorpius. M80 contains hundreds of thousands of stars. Stars in globular clusters all form at about the same time. This makes them useful for the study of stellar evolution, as the stars differ only in their masses. These stars are around 15 billion years old. Some stars with a mass similar to our Sun have developed into the bright red giants (orange) seen throughout this cluster. Image taken on the 1st July 1999

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of Globular cluster M80, captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. Located approximately 28,000 light years away in the constellation Scorpius, this massive star cluster is a sight to behold. Comprising hundreds of thousands of stars that were all formed around 15 billion years ago, M80 offers valuable insights into stellar evolution. The stars within globular clusters like M80 are particularly intriguing as they all originate from the same time period and differ only in their masses. This characteristic makes them an ideal subject for studying stellar evolution. In this image, we can observe some stars resembling our Sun that have evolved into bright red giants, emitting a warm orange glow throughout the entire cluster. Taken on July 1st, 1999, this photograph not only captures the sheer grandeur and complexity of M80 but also serves as a reminder of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our universe. The Science Photo Library has expertly preserved this extraordinary moment through their exceptional craftsmanship. As we gaze upon this breathtaking image print from Science Photo Library, let us marvel at the vastness and intricacy of our cosmos while appreciating how far we have come in unraveling its mysteries.
