Goitre, 15th century artwork C018 / 1849

Goitre. 15th century artwork of a man with an enlarged thyroid gland (goitre). The thyroid is an endocrine gland found in the neck, responsible for the production or hormones controlling the bodys metabolism. This condition is usually due to a deficiency in iodine, which is used to produce the hormones. The release of thyroid stimulating hormone (THS), to speed up hormone production, causes the swelling. A large goitre will cause a persons neck to swell and may cause breathing and swallowing difficulties. Photographed in St John the Baptist church, Ribcev Laz, Slovenia

Endocrine Endocrinology Enlarged Fresco Mediaeval Medieval Middle Ages Neck Painting Slovenia Swollen Thyroid Gland Condition Disorder Goitre Ribcev Laz St John The Baptist Church

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable 15th-century artwork titled "Goitre". The piece depicts a man with an enlarged thyroid gland, symbolizing the debilitating condition known as goitre. Nestled within the neck, the thyroid is an endocrine gland responsible for regulating our body's metabolism through hormone production. The artist ingeniously portrays the consequences of iodine deficiency in this historical masterpiece. The scarcity of iodine disrupts hormone synthesis and triggers the release of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), leading to abnormal swelling. A person afflicted by a severe goitre would experience visible neck enlargement, along with potential difficulties in breathing and swallowing. Photographed within St John the Baptist church in Ribcev Laz, Slovenia, this medieval fresco offers us a glimpse into medical knowledge from centuries past. It serves as a poignant reminder that even during those times, people grappled with disorders affecting their well-being. This extraordinary artwork not only highlights the impact of goitre on individuals but also sheds light on our understanding of human anatomy and medicine throughout history. Its presence in Science Photo Library's collection curated by Dr Rob Stepney invites us to appreciate both its artistic value and its significance as a testament to our ongoing quest for knowledge about the complexities of the human body.
