Syrian Desert, satellite image

Syrian Desert, satellite image. North is at top. Vegetation is red and dark green, while arid areas of sand and rock are light green and light blue. Water is blue. At centre is Jabal Sis, a huge extinct volcanic crater rising 100 metres above the surrounding plain. This area, part of the Syrian Desert, is in south-western Syria, near the border with Jordan. The water flow patterns on the landscape are evidence of seasonal flooding that supports the sparse vegetation in this area. The area shown in this image is around 100 kilometres wide. The image data includes infrared wavelengths, and was obtained on 6 November 2000, by the Landsat 7 satellite

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the stunning Syrian Desert from a satellite's perspective. The image, taken on November 6,2000, by the Landsat 7 satellite, reveals an expansive landscape with its north at the top. The contrasting colors depict various features of this arid region: vibrant red and dark green represent vegetation while light green and light blue symbolize sandy and rocky areas. Blue patches indicate water bodies scattered throughout the terrain. At the heart of this mesmerizing view lies Jabal Sis, an enormous extinct volcanic crater towering 100 meters above its surroundings. Located in southwestern Syria near Jordan's border, this part of the Syrian Desert spans approximately 100 kilometers wide. The intricate patterns formed by water flow across the land bear witness to seasonal flooding that sustains sparse vegetation in this otherwise barren environment. This snapshot was captured using infrared wavelengths, providing valuable insights into both physical geography and environmental conditions. Transporting us to another world within our own planet Earth, this photograph encapsulates nature's raw beauty and showcases how satellites enable us to observe our planet from space. It serves as a reminder of Earth's diverse landscapes and highlights Syria's unique geographical features without any commercial intentions or affiliations attached to it.
