Haemophilus influenzae bacteria
False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Haemophilus influenzae (Pfeiffers bacillus), a Gram negative, non-motile, non- sporing species of bacilli (rod-shaped bacteria). H. influenzae is exclusively a parasite of man, living in the upper respiratory tract of healthy individuals. Most sub- species are non-capsulate bacteria, but there are 6 types of capsulated strains (types a to f), of which type b is responsible for numerous incidences of bacterial meningitis in young infants. Other type b diseases include epiglottitis (inflammation of epiglottis), causing potentially fatal obstruction in airflow to lungs. Mag: X18000 at 35mm, x36000 at 6x7cm. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Haemophilus influenzae bacteria in all its intricate detail. The false-color transmission electron micrograph (TEM) reveals this Gram-negative, non-motile, and non-sporing species of bacilli in stunning clarity. Haemophilus influenzae is a fascinating bacterium that exclusively parasitizes humans, residing primarily in the upper respiratory tract of healthy individuals. While most sub-species are non-capsulated, there are six types of capsulated strains denoted as types a to f. Among these strains, type b has gained notoriety for causing numerous cases of bacterial meningitis in young infants. The impact of this bacterium extends beyond meningitis; it also contributes to other serious conditions such as epiglottitis - an inflammation of the epiglottis that can potentially obstruct airflow to the lungs and prove fatal if left untreated. At magnifications of X18000 at 35mm and X36000 at 6x7cm, this image offers a glimpse into the microscopic world where these tiny organisms thrive. It serves as a reminder of both their beauty and potential harm they pose. Science Photo Library presents this awe-inspiring photograph as part of its extensive collection on transmission electron microscopy, microbiology, bacteriology, and related fields. Through images like these, we gain valuable insights into microbes' structure and behavior while deepening our understanding of diseases caused by specific bacteria like Haemophilus influenzae.
