Hans Christian Oersted

Portrait of Hans Christian Oersted, a Danish physicist, 1777-1851. Oersted studied physical science and pharmacy in Copenhagen, where he later became professor of physics. In 1820 he showed that the needle of a magnetic compass is deflected when electric current passes through a wire close by. In retrospect his experiment is seen as the foundation of the study of electromagnetism. His discovery was published in 1820, and resulted in a whirl of activity in the field of physics. In 1934 a unit of magnetic field strength was named the oersted in his honour. He also obtained the first accurate value for the compressibility of water

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind of Hans Christian Oersted, a Danish physicist whose groundbreaking discoveries revolutionized the field of electromagnetism. In this monochrome engraving, Oersted's portrait exudes intelligence and determination. Born in 1777, Oersted pursued his studies in physical science and pharmacy at Copenhagen before eventually becoming a revered professor of physics. However, it was his experiment in 1820 that truly cemented his place in scientific history. By demonstrating that an electric current passing through a wire could deflect the needle of a magnetic compass nearby, he laid the foundation for our understanding of electromagnetism. The publication of Oersted's discovery caused an immediate flurry of activity within the realm of physics. Scientists around the world were inspired by his work and began exploring further applications and implications for electromagnetism. Such was its significance that in 1934, a unit measuring magnetic field strength was named after him - the oersted. Beyond this monumental achievement, Oersted also contributed to our knowledge about water compressibility by obtaining its first accurate value. His dedication to expanding human understanding knew no bounds. This remarkable print not only captures Hans Christian Oersted's likeness but also serves as a tribute to his immense contributions to science. It is a testament to how one individual can shape our understanding of the natural world and leave an indelible mark on future generations.
