Heath and moorland fires, UK

Heath and moorland fires in the UK, Aqua satellite image. April 2003 was a warm, dry month in Northern Europe. This, combined with a strong easterly wind, led to heath and moorland fires breaking out throughout Britain. Plumes from the largest of these can be seen below the Pennines and along the west coast of Scotland. Sand from the Sahara and air pollution exacerbated the problem, forming the hazy clouds seen in the image. This image was produced on the 18th April 2003 by NASAs Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the devastating heath and moorland fires that engulfed the United Kingdom in April 2003. The Aqua satellite image, taken by NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), showcases the aftermath of these destructive fires during a warm and dry month in Northern Europe. The image reveals plumes of smoke billowing below the majestic Pennines and along Scotland's west coast, indicating the scale of these wildfires. However, what makes this picture even more striking is the presence of hazy clouds caused by a combination of Saharan sand and air pollution. These additional factors exacerbated an already dire situation, creating an eerie atmosphere across Britain. As we gaze upon this photograph, it serves as a stark reminder of how natural disasters can be intensified by human activities such as air pollution. The image not only documents a specific event but also highlights broader issues related to climate change and its impact on our environment. Through Earth observation from space, MODIS provides invaluable insights into meteorological phenomena like these fires. This particular snapshot offers both scientific value and aesthetic appeal, showcasing nature's raw power while urging us to take action towards preserving our planet for future generations.
