Herodotus, Greek historian, artwork
Herodotus. Historical artwork of Herodotus of Halicarnassus (484-425 BC), a Greek historian from Iona who documented the Greco-Persian wars, which occurred in 490 and 480-479 BC. This documentation was entitled The Histories, and is probably the work for which he is best known. The Histories also contains excellent ethnographic descriptions of the peoples that the Persians conquered, fairy tales, gossip, legends, and a very humanitarian morale. He is considered the worlds first historian and often referred to as the " Father of History"

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the legendary figure of Herodotus, a Greek historian whose monumental work continues to shape our understanding of ancient civilizations. Created in monochrome, this artwork beautifully captures the essence of Herodotus as a distinguished and thoughtful individual. Herodotus, born in Halicarnassus around 484 BC, is widely regarded as the "Father of History". His most renowned work, The Histories, meticulously documents the Greco-Persian wars that unfolded between 490 and 480-479 BC. However, his contributions extend far beyond mere historical accounts. Within these pages lie fascinating ethnographic descriptions of various peoples conquered by the Persians—providing invaluable insights into their cultures and traditions. Notably humanitarian in nature, Herodotus' writings also encompassed fairy tales, legends, gossip, and moral teachings. This multifaceted approach to history distinguishes him from his contemporaries and solidifies his status as an exceptional storyteller. In this illustration capturing Herodotus' likeness with great detail and precision, we see a man who dedicated himself to meticulous research and documentation. With his penetrating gaze and wise countenance framed by flowing hair reminiscent of classical antiquity, he embodies wisdom accumulated through years of study. As we admire this portrait depicting one of history's greatest minds—a Caucasian male believed to be in his fifties—we are reminded not only of the importance he placed on preserving historical events but also on celebrating diverse human experiences. Through this artwork from Science Photo Library's collection honoring Herodotus' legacy as a pioneer historian emerges vividly before us.
