High-contrast direct DNA image, TEM
High-contrast direct DNA image. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the first high-contrast direct image of a bundle (fibre) of strands of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). This bundle is six DNA strands wrapped around a seventh. The magnified area shows the helical structure. The width of the bundle is around 20 nanometres. This image was obtained by a team led by Enzo di Fabrizio from the Department of Nanostructure, at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Genoa. The results were published in November 2012 in the journal Nanoletters, and in Nature in January 2013

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a groundbreaking achievement in the field of biology. Taken using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), it reveals the first-ever high-contrast direct image of a bundle of DNA strands. The image, captured by Enzo di Fabrizio and his team at the Department of Nanostructure in the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Genoa, was published in prestigious scientific journals such as Nanoletters and Nature. The photograph exhibits an array of colorful strands representing six DNA helices wrapped around a seventh one. The magnified area highlights the intricate helical structure, providing valuable insights into the macromolecule's composition and arrangement. With a width measuring approximately 20 nanometers, this nanostructure is truly remarkable. This historic breakthrough holds immense significance for genetics and biochemistry research. It sheds light on DNA's structural properties at an unprecedented level, furthering our understanding of its role as the blueprint for life itself. By pioneering high-contrast direct imaging techniques, di Fabrizio's team has pushed boundaries within their field. As we delve deeper into the 21st century, this photograph serves as a reminder that science continues to unravel nature's mysteries on both microscopic and macroscopic scales. Its vibrant colors against a blue background symbolize not only scientific progress but also artistic beauty found within biological structures. This print from Science Photo Library encapsulates years of dedication and innovation while inspiring future generations to explore new frontiers in genetic research.
