Jacques de Romas
Coloured portrait of Jacques de Romas. In 1750 Romas wrote a dissertation on the physical similarities between lightning and electricity. Subsequently the famous kite experiment was devised by Franklin and Romas independently. According to Priestley, writing in 1767, Franklin carried out his kite experiment in 1752. Romas first performed his kite experiment in Nerac, France, in 1753. He incorporated a metallic wire in the kite string to aid conduction and it is claimed he produced sparks up to 3 metres long. His experiment was watched by an amazed crowd. Romas continued his kite experiments for several years and continued his research work on the nature and effects of lightning. Today Franklin is remembered for these experiments whilst Romas gets little credit. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Jacques de Romas, a brilliant scientist of the 18th century. In this colored portrait, we catch a glimpse of his intellectual prowess and dedication to understanding the mysteries of electricity. In 1750, Romas wrote a groundbreaking dissertation on the striking similarities between lightning and electricity. Little did he know that his work would lay the foundation for one of history's most famous experiments - the kite experiment. Although Benjamin Franklin is often credited with this revolutionary experiment in 1752, it is important to acknowledge that Romas independently devised a similar experiment just one year later in Nerac, France. With an innovative addition of metallic wire incorporated into the kite string for enhanced conduction, Romas produced awe-inspiring sparks up to three meters long. The hazardous nature of working with lightning didn't deter him; instead, it drew crowds who were amazed by his daring pursuit of knowledge. For several years following this remarkable demonstration, Romas continued his research on atmospheric electricity and its effects. Sadly, history has largely overlooked Jacques de Romas while celebrating Franklin's contributions to our understanding of electricity. However, through this mesmerizing image captured by Science Photo Library, we can now appreciate the immense courage and scientific curiosity that defined Romas' legacy as an unsung hero in the history of physics and atmospheric phenomena.
