HST composite image of star cluster NGC 1850

Composite ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope of the old star cluster NGC 1850, found in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The cluster is mainly formed by yellow stars which are about 50 million years old. White, more massive and younger stars (4 million years old) are seen scattered in the frame. The difference between the ages of these two populations of stars suggests that they are two separate star groups lying along the same line of sight. It is thought that supernova explosions in the older cluster might have triggered the birth of the younger cluster

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of star cluster NGC 1850, as captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. The composite image combines ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared wavelengths to unveil a stunning celestial spectacle found within the Large Magellanic Cloud. The focal point of this image is an ancient star cluster composed primarily of yellow stars that have gracefully aged for approximately 50 million years. However, scattered throughout the frame are younger and more massive white stars, only four million years old. This stark contrast in age between the two populations suggests that they are distinct groups of stars positioned along the same line of sight. Scientists hypothesize that explosive supernova events within the older cluster may have triggered the birth of its youthful counterpart. Such cosmic fireworks serve as a reminder of nature's ability to create new beginnings amidst stellar destruction. As we gaze upon this extraordinary composition, our minds wander through vast expanses of space and time. We ponder not only the intricate dance between these celestial bodies but also our own place in this grand universe. Through images like these from Science Photo Library, we gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for both the mysteries and wonders that lie beyond our terrestrial realm.
