HST image of gas ring around supernova 1987a

Gas ring around supernova 1987a. False-colour Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical image of a ring of gas (yellow) around the remnants of supernova 1987a. This image was taken by the European Space Agencys Faint Object Camera on August 23rd, 1990. The tightly knotted debris from the stellar explosion appears as the red blob in the centre of the gas ring. The blue stars to the left & right of the ring are not associated with the supernova. The gas ring, some 170, 000 light years from Earth, is eventually expected to be disintegrated by expanding debris from the supernova

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of the gas ring surrounding supernova 1987a. The false-color image, captured by the European Space Agency's Faint Object Camera on August 23rd, 1990, reveals an awe-inspiring sight in our vast cosmos. The vibrant yellow ring of gas encircles the remnants of the supernova, while its tightly knotted debris takes center stage as a striking red blob. This explosion from a dying star has left behind an intricate pattern that captivates astronomers and stargazers alike. To add to this celestial spectacle, blue stars gracefully adorn both sides of the gas ring. However, they are not directly associated with the supernova itself but serve as stunning companions in this cosmic display. Situated approximately 170,000 light years away from Earth, this distant phenomenon is expected to undergo further transformation over time. The expanding debris from the supernova will eventually disintegrate this remarkable gas ring completely. As we delve into science's exploration of astronomy and cosmology through space telescope imagery like this one taken by HST, we gain deeper insights into stellar phenomena such as star death. Each photograph serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about our universe and its infinite wonders.
