HST image of NGC 4261 core & dust disc
Evidence for a black hole at the core of a galaxy. False-colour visible light image of the core of galaxy NGC 4261 made by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The doughnut shape is thought to be a region of hot gas with a 300 light year wide inner disc of cooler gas and dust. At the centre is a very bright object, possibly the hot accretion disc of a black hole. There is also a feint V- shaped region coming from the core which correlates well with the jets from the galaxy seen at radio wavelengths. Such jets also support the idea of a black hole at the core. NGC 4261 is about 45 million light years from Earth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the core of galaxy NGC 4261, captured by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The false-color visible light image reveals a mesmerizing doughnut-shaped structure, believed to be a region filled with hot gas. At its center lies an intensely luminous object, potentially indicating the presence of a black hole's hot accretion disc. The inner part of this cosmic doughnut encompasses cooler gas and dust, spanning an impressive 300 light years in diameter. This intricate arrangement provides compelling evidence for the existence of a black hole at the heart of this galactic marvel. Adding to the intrigue is a faint V-shaped region emanating from the core, aligning perfectly with radio wavelength observations that detect powerful jets originating from within the galaxy. These jets further reinforce our understanding that NGC 4261 harbors a supermassive black hole at its core. Situated approximately 45 million light years away from Earth, NGC 4261 continues to captivate astronomers and cosmologists alike. Its enigmatic features offer valuable insights into galactic dynamics and contribute to our ever-growing knowledge about these celestial phenomena. This awe-inspiring HST imagery not only highlights NGC 4261's unique characteristics but also serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of unraveling mysteries beyond our planet's boundaries.
