Hubble telescope image of the Stingray Nebula
Stingray nebula. Hubble telescope light image of the Stingray nebula, the youngest known planetary nebula yet discovered in 1998. A nebula is a cloud of gas and dust. The bright central star is in the middle of a green ring of gas, with a companion star at upper left. Bubbles of gas are at lower left and upper right; red curved lines represent bright gas heated by a " shock" when the central stars wind hits the walls of the bubble. Colours are emitted by nitrogen (red), oxygen (green), and hydrogen (blue). The nebula is 130 solar systems large, located 18, 000 light years away in the Ara (Altar) constellation. Data obtained March 1996

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the stunning beauty of the Stingray Nebula, as captured by the Hubble telescope. As one of the youngest planetary nebulae ever discovered in 1998, this celestial wonder continues to fascinate astronomers and cosmologists alike. The image reveals a mesmerizing cloud of gas and dust, with a vibrant green ring encircling a brilliant central star. Positioned at the upper left is a companion star, adding an intriguing element to this cosmic spectacle. Additionally, bubbles of gas can be observed at both lower left and upper right corners. Highlighted by red curved lines, these represent bright gas that has been heated by a powerful "shock" caused when the central stars' wind collides with the walls of the bubble. The colors emitted within this ethereal scene are attributed to nitrogen (red), oxygen (green), and hydrogen (blue). Spanning an astonishing size equivalent to 130 solar systems, this breathtaking nebula resides approximately 18,000 light years away in the Ara (Altar) constellation. The data used for capturing this awe-inspiring moment was obtained back in March 1996. Immerse yourself in the wonders of our universe through this remarkable photograph from Science Photo Library – a testament to stellar evolution and nature's extraordinary ability to create such mesmerizing cosmic artistry.
