Human epididymis, light micrograph
Human epididymis. Light micrograph of a section through a human epididymis, the tube connecting the testis to the vas deferens, in which sperm matures. The epididymis consists of a coiled duct about seven metres long. Its highly coiled shape makes it appear as multiple circles when sliced transversely. The lumen of the duct (white) is lined with pseudostratified epithelium (pink), which is made up of columnar cells with elongated nuclei and rounded basal cells with circular nuclei. The purple fibres extending into the lumen are stereocilia. The duct is surrounded by a layer of smooth muscle (yellow). Magnification: x360 when printed 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a light micrograph of the human epididymis, an essential component of the male reproductive system. The epididymis acts as a connecting tube between the testis and vas deferens, playing a crucial role in sperm maturation. The intricate structure of this coiled duct is beautifully captured in this image. When sliced transversely, it appears as multiple circles due to its highly coiled shape. The lumen of the duct is lined with pseudostratified epithelium, characterized by columnar cells with elongated nuclei and rounded basal cells with circular nuclei. Intriguingly, purple fibres extend into the lumen which are identified as stereocilia. Surrounding the duct is a layer of smooth muscle depicted in yellow hues. With a magnification of x360 when printed at 10cm wide, this photograph allows us to appreciate the microscopic details that contribute to male reproduction. It provides valuable insights into sex cell development and highlights the complexity and beauty found within our own bodies. This remarkable image serves as a testament to both scientific exploration and artistic representation – merging biology, anatomy, histology, and light microscopy into one visually stunning composition.
