Hydrofiner at an oil refinery

Oil refinery. This is the hydrofining area, where crude oil products are processed to remove any impurities, such as sulphur. This is a SCANfining unit, which uses a proprietary catalyst system developed by ExxonMobil, together with Akzo Nobel. SCANfining (Selective Cat Naphtha hydrofining) uses a catalyst called RT-225. It minimises hydrogenation of olefins. This preserves the octane rating of the final petrol or jet fuel products, and also reduces the consumption of hydrogen. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the hydrofining area of an oil refinery, specifically highlighting the Hydrofiner. This crucial section of the refinery is responsible for processing crude oil products to eliminate impurities like sulphur. The SCANfining unit depicted in the image utilizes a unique catalyst system developed by ExxonMobil and Akzo Nobel. Known as Selective Cat Naphtha hydrofining (SCANfining), this process employs a catalyst called RT-225 which effectively minimizes hydrogenation of olefins. The significance of this technology lies in its ability to preserve the octane rating of final petrol or jet fuel products while reducing hydrogen consumption. Captured at ExxonMobil's Fawley Oil Refinery located in Hampshire, UK, this photograph showcases European excellence in industrial and technological advancements within the oil refining sector. The towering structure featured here represents not only British engineering prowess but also signifies a commitment towards purifying petroleum products efficiently. With its state-of-the-art equipment and cutting-edge catalytic processes, this facility plays a vital role in refining and purifying various petroleum derivatives such as kerosene. Overall, this visually stunning image encapsulates both the technical expertise involved in chemical engineering within the petrochemical industry and highlights how advanced structural engineering contributes to efficient purification processes.
