EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind of Igor Sikorsky, a Russian-US engineer who revolutionized the world of aviation. Born in Kiev, Russia in 1889, Sikorsky's passion for flight led him to pursue education in St Petersburg and Kiev before emigrating to the United States in 1919. Sikorsky's groundbreaking achievements began with his construction and successful flight of the first four-engined aeroplane. Inspired by this triumph, he went on to establish the Sikorsky Aero Engineering Company in 1923. Throughout his illustrious career, he designed and built numerous flying boats that pushed boundaries and expanded possibilities within aviation. However, it was his pioneering work on helicopters that truly solidified Sikorsky's legacy. In 1939, he unveiled his masterpiece - the VS300 - marking a significant milestone as the world's first successful helicopter. This remarkable invention laid the foundation for future advancements in vertical flight technology. As we gaze upon this monochrome portrait capturing Sikorsky's determined expression, we are reminded of his unwavering dedication to engineering excellence. His contributions not only propelled human innovation but also played an instrumental role during World War II when exclusively used by the US army. This extraordinary print from Science Photo Library serves as a timeless tribute to Igor Sikorsky - an exceptional individual whose ingenuity forever changed our perception of what is possible in aviation history.
