Insulin molecule C014 / 2120

Insulin molecule. Molecular module of insulin showing its primary structure. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas. It consists of two peptide chains, A and B, which are linked by disulphide bridges (yellow). This is the monomer form of the hormone, the active form, which circulates in the blood. Insulin is released from the pancreas when blood sugar levels are high, for example after a meal. Insufficient production of insulin leads to an accumulation of glucose in the blood causing diabetes. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate molecular structure of insulin, a vital hormone produced by the pancreas. The image highlights the primary structure of insulin, revealing its two peptide chains, A and B, which are interconnected by disulphide bridges represented in yellow. This monomer form of insulin is responsible for regulating blood sugar levels and circulates within our bloodstream. Insulin plays a crucial role in maintaining our body's metabolic balance. When blood sugar levels rise after a meal, the pancreas releases insulin to facilitate glucose absorption into cells for energy production. However, insufficient production of this hormone can lead to diabetes mellitus—a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated glucose levels in the bloodstream. The artwork beautifully captures the complexity and elegance of this essential protein molecule. Its white background allows us to focus solely on understanding its structural components and appreciate its significance in endocrinology and biochemistry. Ramon Andrade from 3DCIENCIA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY has masterfully illustrated this molecular model with precision and attention to detail. This visually stunning print serves as a reminder of the remarkable intricacy that exists within our bodies at a microscopic level while shedding light on an important aspect of human health—insulin regulation.
