Insulin molecule C014 / 2121

Insulin molecule. Molecular module of insulin showing its secondary structure. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas. It consists of two peptide chains, A (blue) and B (yellow), which are linked by disulphide bridges (yellow). This is the monomer form of the hormone, the active form, which circulates in the blood. Insulin is released from the pancreas when blood sugar levels are high, for example after a meal. Insufficient production of insulin leads to an accumulation of glucose in the blood causing diabetes. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate molecular structure of insulin, a vital hormone produced by the pancreas. The image reveals the secondary structure of insulin, with its two peptide chains, A (blue) and B (yellow), elegantly linked together by disulphide bridges (yellow). This monomer form of insulin is what circulates in our blood and plays a crucial role in regulating glucose levels. Insulin acts as a messenger within our body, released by the pancreas when blood sugar levels rise after a meal. Its primary function is to facilitate the uptake and utilization of glucose by cells throughout our body. However, insufficient production or impaired functioning of this essential hormone can lead to diabetes mellitus – a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels. The artistically rendered illustration against a white background not only highlights the beauty found within scientific structures but also serves as an educational tool for understanding this complex molecule. With its blend of biology and chemistry, this artwork provides insight into both biochemical processes and endocrinology. Through this visually striking depiction, RAMON ANDRADE 3DCIENCIA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY offers us an opportunity to appreciate the remarkable intricacies that underlie human physiology while raising awareness about diabetes and its impact on individuals worldwide.
