Insulin production
Insulin production. Scientist using an ion- exchange chromatography column to purify recombinant human insulin. Insulin is used to treat insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, a medical condition where the body does not produce enough insulin hormone itself. Recombinant insulin is obtained from micro-organisms, in this case yeast, which have been genetically engineered to produce insulin. Before it can be used, the insulin must first be separated from the yeast cells, and then from any impurities that may be present. This separation is carried out by chromatography. Photographed in 2004 at Biocon, a biotechnology company in Bangalore, India
