Iron castings
Iron castings on the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. At 307 metres, this aqueduct is the longest and highest cast-iron aqueduct in the world. It carries the Llangollen canal 38 metres above the River Dee. It was designed by Thomas Telford and constructed between 1795 and 1805. The iron castings were produced at the Plaskynaston foundry and each casting dovetails into the next. The joints were made watertight using welsh flannel dipped in boiling sugar, after which the joints were sealed with lead. The aqueduct is a grade 1 listed building. It is still used for its original purpose and is crossed by more than 1000 boats each year

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable iron castings on the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a true engineering marvel. Stretching an impressive 307 meters, this aqueduct holds the distinction of being both the longest and highest cast-iron aqueduct in the world. Designed by Thomas Telford and built between 1795 and 1805, it gracefully carries the Llangollen canal a staggering 38 meters above the River Dee. The intricate iron castings featured in this image were meticulously produced at Plaskynaston foundry. Each casting seamlessly dovetails into its neighboring piece, forming a seamless structure that defies gravity and time. To ensure watertightness, Welsh flannel dipped in boiling sugar was ingeniously employed to seal joints before they were further secured with lead. As a testament to its architectural brilliance, this awe-inspiring aqueduct has earned Grade I listed status. Even after centuries since its construction, it continues to serve its original purpose flawlessly as more than 1000 boats cross over it each year. This photograph not only captures the beauty of British architecture but also highlights human ingenuity in conquering nature's obstacles through innovative engineering solutions. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct stands tall as an enduring symbol of mankind's ability to harmoniously blend artistry with functionality while leaving an indelible mark on our environment and geography.
