Islets of Langerhans cells, artwork

Islets of Langerhans cells, computer artwork. These cells (large, pink) of the pancreas release hormones (dots) into the blood. About 70 per cent of these are beta cells and 15-20 per cent are alpha cells. Both regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels. Beta cells produce insulin hormone to store glucose as glycogen in the liver and muscles. Alpha cells secrete glucagon, which converts glycogen back into glucose when needed for energy. They work as a paracrine feedback system, where insulin inhibits alpha cells and glucagon inhibits beta cells

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the intricate beauty of Islets of Langerhans cells, found in the pancreas. The vibrant pink cells take center stage, surrounded by a network of blood vessels and proteins. These remarkable cells play a crucial role in regulating our blood sugar levels. Comprising about 70 percent of these islet cells are beta cells, depicted as small dots within the artwork. They are responsible for producing insulin hormone, which acts as a key to store excess glucose as glycogen in the liver and muscles. This process ensures that our bodies maintain optimal blood sugar levels. The remaining 15-20 percent of islet cells are alpha cells, represented by larger dots within the image. Alpha cells secrete glucagon hormone, which performs an equally vital function by converting stored glycogen back into glucose when our body requires energy. Working together harmoniously, these two types of islet cells create a paracrine feedback system within our bodies. Insulin released from beta cells inhibits alpha cell activity while glucagon secreted by alpha cells inhibits beta cell function. This delicate balance allows for precise regulation of blood sugar levels. This visually stunning artwork not only highlights the complexity and elegance of cellular biology but also serves as a reminder of how intricately interconnected different components within our bodies work to maintain homeostasis and ensure overall well-being.
