ISS Columbus laboratory, exhibit model C016 / 6378

ISS Columbus laboratory, exhibit model. The Columbus module is the European Space Agencys science laboratory on the International Space Station (ISS). It is 7 metres in length, and was installed in 2008. Experiment racks (International Standard Payload Racks, ISPRs) are installed on the walls of the module, and operated by the astronaut crew, who train on Earth before missions to the ISS. Examples of ISPRs include the Fluid Science Laboratory, Biolab, and European Physiology Modules. The Columbus laboratory was designed and constructed in Italy and Germany, with its control centre at the German Space Operations Centre

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the ISS Columbus laboratory, an exhibit model that represents the European Space Agency's remarkable science laboratory aboard the International Space Station (ISS). With a length of 7 meters, this state-of-the-art module was installed in 2008 and serves as a hub for groundbreaking experiments conducted by astronaut crews. The walls of the Columbus module are adorned with International Standard Payload Racks (ISPRs), which house various experiment racks such as the Fluid Science Laboratory, Biolab, and European Physiology Modules. Designed and constructed collaboratively by Italy and Germany, this technological marvel is a testament to European engineering prowess. Its control center is located at the German Space Operations Centre. Prior to their missions to the ISS, astronauts undergo rigorous training on Earth to operate these ISPRs effectively in zero gravity conditions. The ISS Columbus laboratory stands as a symbol of scientific progress in space exploration during the 21st century. It exemplifies international cooperation and highlights Europe's significant contributions to manned space flight. This stunning display model captured by DETLEV VAN RAVENSWAAY/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY offers viewers a glimpse into this extraordinary facility where cutting-edge research takes place amidst microgravity environments. As we continue our journey into space exploration, it is through advancements like these that we push boundaries and expand our understanding of both technology and human potential.
