Issac Barrow, English mathematician
Isaac Barrow (1630-1677), English mathematician, who resigned his post at Cambridge University, England, in favour of his pupil Isaac Newton. Barrow graduated in 1648 but because of unrest during Cromwells rule was unable to take up an academic post until 1660, when he became Professor of Greek at Cambridge University. From 1664 to 1669 he held the Lucasian Chair in Mathematics, inherited by Newton at age 27. Barrow came close to anticipating some of the concepts of differential calculus that Newton later expounded. He was a noted classicist and theologian

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Issac Barrow, a prominent English mathematician of the seventeenth century. Born in 1630, Barrow's academic journey was hindered by political unrest during Cromwell's rule, delaying his appointment to an academic post until 1660. Eventually, he became a Professor of Greek at Cambridge University and held the prestigious Lucasian Chair in Mathematics from 1664 to 1669. Barrow's significant contribution lies not only in his role as a teacher but also as the mentor who recognized the brilliance of his pupil Isaac Newton. In an extraordinary act of selflessness, Barrow resigned from his position at Cambridge University in favor of Newton, paving the way for one of history's greatest scientific minds to flourish. Although Barrow came close to anticipating some concepts later expounded by Newton himself – particularly those related to differential calculus – he is equally renowned for his expertise as a classicist and theologian. His multifaceted knowledge allowed him to make valuable contributions across various disciplines. This colored artwork captures the essence of this remarkable man whose legacy continues to inspire generations. As we delve into this portrait, we are reminded not only of Barrow's mathematical prowess but also his profound impact on academia and intellectual pursuits during a transformative era in history.
