Januvia diabetes drug molecule

Januvia diabetes drug, molecular model. Januvia (sitagliptin) is a hypoglycaemic drug, one that reduces blood sugar levels. Diabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels can get dangerously high due to a lack of insulin, the hormone that reduces them. Januvia works by inhibiting the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP- 4). DPP-4 rapidly deactivates the incretin hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1), which promotes insulin release. Hence, inhibiting DPP-4 prolongs the effects of GLP-1, keeping insulin levels high. Atoms are colour-coded: carbon (grey), hydrogen (yellow), oxygen (red), nitrogen (blue) and fluorine (green). Januvia is marketed by Merck, and was approved in the USA in October 2006

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate molecular structure of Januvia, a groundbreaking diabetes drug. Designed to combat dangerously high blood sugar levels, Januvia is an oral medication that belongs to the class of hypoglycemic drugs. At its core, this compound inhibits the activity of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4), an enzyme responsible for deactivating GLP-1 - a hormone crucial in promoting insulin release. The vibrant colors used to represent different atoms in this image bring life to the complex composition. Carbon appears as grey, hydrogen as yellow, oxygen as red, nitrogen as blue, and fluorine as green. By skillfully inhibiting DPP-4 and extending the effects of GLP-1, Januvia ensures that insulin levels remain elevated within diabetic patients. Januvia's significance cannot be overstated; it represents a remarkable breakthrough in pharmacology and medical science. Developed by Merck and approved by US authorities in October 2006, this innovative drug has revolutionized diabetes treatment worldwide. Through this visually stunning representation captured by Science Photo Library's lens, we gain insight into the microscopic world where medicine meets biology. This photograph serves not only as a testament to human ingenuity but also highlights our ongoing battle against hyperglycemia – ultimately offering hope for millions living with diabetes around the globe.
