Jean Baptiste van Helmont

Jean Baptiste van Helmont (1579-1644), Belgian doctor & chemist. Van Helmonts work represented a transition from alchemy to experimental chemistry. He was the first to use the word " gas" (from the Greek chaos). He identified carbon dioxide and monoxide, nitrous oxide, and methane. He was the first to use the boiling and freezing points of water as standards for temperature. In medicine, he employed remedies specific to the disease, the affected organ, and the causative agent. He showed that acid is the digestive agent in the stomach. He realised that matter is indestructible and that metals dissolved in acid can be recovered. He held that matter is a combination of air & water. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases Jean Baptiste van Helmont, a renowned Belgian doctor and chemist who made significant contributions to the fields of chemistry and medicine. Van Helmont's work marked a pivotal shift from alchemy to experimental chemistry, revolutionizing scientific understanding during his time. One of his notable achievements was coining the term "gas" derived from the Greek word chaos. He also identified several gases including carbon dioxide and monoxide, nitrous oxide, and methane, laying the foundation for our understanding of these substances today. Van Helmont's brilliance extended beyond chemistry as he introduced new concepts in medicine. He believed in tailoring remedies specific to each disease, affected organ, and causative agent - an approach that emphasized personalized treatment long before it became mainstream. In addition to this groundbreaking medical insight, Van Helmont discovered that acid serves as the digestive agent in the stomach. Moreover, he recognized that matter is indestructible and demonstrated how metals dissolved in acid can be recovered through chemical processes. His profound understanding led him to propose that matter is a combination of air and water - an idea far ahead of its time. This extraordinary portrait captures not only Jean Baptiste van Helmont's intellectual prowess but also his immense impact on shaping the history of science and medicine.
