Johannes Hevelius, Polish astronomer

Johannes Hevelius (1611-1687), Polish astronomer (far left) at a meeting, historical artwork. At centre is an allegoric figure personifying the Sun. To the right of this figure is the mathematician and astronomer Ulugh Beg (1394-1449), also known as Muhammad Taragay. Hevelius was the founder of lunar topography: in 1647 he published his Selenographia, a chart of the Moons surface that took four years to compile. As well as this, he observed sunspots and discovered four comets, and detailed the variability of the star Omicron Ceti, which he named Mira. He also introduced several new constellations whose names are still in use today, including Lynx, Lacerta and Vulpecula

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical artwork captures a significant meeting of brilliant minds in the field of astronomy. At the far left stands Johannes Hevelius, a renowned Polish astronomer whose contributions to lunar topography and celestial observations were groundbreaking. In 1647, he published his remarkable work called Selenographia, an intricate chart meticulously depicting the surface of the Moon that took him four years to compile. In the center of this image stands an allegoric figure personifying the Sun, symbolizing its central role in our solar system. To the right of this radiant figure is Ulugh Beg, also known as Muhammad Taragay, a mathematician and astronomer from Uzbekistan who lived during the 14th and 15th centuries. Johannes Hevelius not only studied sunspots but also discovered four comets during his career. His detailed observations led him to describe Omicron Ceti's variability accurately, earning it the name Mira. Moreover, Hevelius introduced several new constellations that are still recognized today including Lynx, Lacerta, and Vulpecula. This monochrome artwork showcases these influential figures against a backdrop representing their medieval era. It serves as a reminder of their immense contributions to astronomical knowledge during a time when scientific exploration was limited by technology yet fueled by curiosity and determination.
