Jonathan Swift, English author

Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), English author. Swift is now best known for his book Gullivers Travels. Originally published pseudonymously in the style of a travel reporter, it is a satire on human morals, which anticipated many current debates in law and animal rights. Swift began his career as a private secretary. In 1694 he went into the church and moved to Dublin, Ireland. He obtained a doctorate in 1701 and visited England, returning to his Irish parish with Esther (Stella) Johnson. Although there is no documented proof, it is thought they married and lived together till her death in 1728. Swift was politically active in Anglo-Irish relations, both writing and lobbying

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Jonathan Swift, the renowned English author who left an indelible mark on literature. Known primarily for his masterpiece "Gulliver's Travels". Swift's genius lies in his ability to craft biting satire that delves into human morality and foreshadows contemporary debates surrounding law and animal rights. Born in 1667, Swift embarked on a multifaceted career as a private secretary before finding solace within the church. In 1694, he made Dublin, Ireland his home and earned a doctorate in 1701. During this time, he visited England but ultimately returned to his Irish parish alongside Esther Johnson, affectionately known as Stella. While their marital status remains unconfirmed by documented evidence, it is widely believed that Swift and Stella shared a deep bond until her passing in 1728. Throughout his life, Swift actively engaged with political matters concerning Anglo-Irish relations through both writing and lobbying efforts. In this colored illustration from the Science Photo Library collection, we catch a glimpse of Jonathan Swift's countenance - an embodiment of intellectual prowess intertwined with historical significance. As we reflect upon this image of one of Britain's most celebrated authors from the seventeenth century onwards, let us appreciate how his literary legacy continues to shape our understanding of society today.
