Joseph Bazalgette, British civil engineer
Joseph Bazalgette (1819-1891). Bust of the British civil engineer Sir Joseph William Bazalgette. Bazalgette is most famous as the builder of Londons sewer system. He examined Londons sewerage problems after cholera outbreaks and water pollution issues in the 1850s. During 1859-65 he planned and supervised the construction of a sewerage system which used 318 million bricks in 2080 kilometres of tunnels, over an area of 169 square kilometres. The system discharged 1890 million litres of sewage, through 3 pumping stations, away from the city. Bazalgette also built the Thames Embankment and bridges over the River Thames at Putney and Battersea. Photographed on the Victoria Embankment, London, UK

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the bust of Sir Joseph William Bazalgette, a renowned British civil engineer. Known primarily for his groundbreaking work in constructing London's sewer system, Bazalgette played a vital role in addressing the city's sanitation issues during the 19th century. After cholera outbreaks and water pollution concerns plagued London in the 1850s, he meticulously examined the sewerage problems and devised an innovative solution. Over a span of six years from 1859 to 1865, Bazalgette masterminded and supervised the construction of an extensive sewerage network comprising an astonishing 2080 kilometers of tunnels. This colossal undertaking utilized a staggering amount of materials - approximately 318 million bricks were employed to create this intricate system that covered an area spanning across 169 square kilometers. With three pumping stations strategically placed throughout, this revolutionary infrastructure effectively redirected a staggering volume of sewage - around 1890 million liters - away from the city. In addition to his remarkable contribution towards improving public health through efficient waste management, Bazalgette also left his mark on London's landscape by constructing notable landmarks such as the Thames Embankment and bridges at Putney and Battersea over River Thames. Captured on Victoria Embankment in London, UK, this photograph not only pays tribute to Sir Joseph William Bazalgette but also serves as a testament to his pioneering spirit and enduring legacy in engineering history.
