Jupiter, first SOFIA image

Focussing Jupiter. A SOFIA infrared image with FORCAST instrument (19.7, 31.5 and 37.1 micrometer wavelength). SOFIA - the flying 2, 7m mirrors observatory onboard an Boeing 7747 SP. The first light pictures were taken on May 26, 2010 of planet Jupiter and M82 galaxy. During the 8-hour flight the crew of 18 scientists, enigineers and technicans thoroughly tested the US/NASA-German/DLR Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared-Astronomy. SOFIA visited its telescope home DLR on September 17th, 2011 for the first time with a landing at Cologne-Porz Airport. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the awe-inspiring beauty of Jupiter, our largest planet in the solar system. Taken on May 26,2010, by the cutting-edge Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), this image offers a unique perspective of Jupiter's mesmerizing features. Equipped with its advanced FORCAST instrument operating at various wavelengths ranging from 19.7 to 37.1 micrometers, SOFIA captured this stunning infrared view of Jupiter. The circular shape and stable heat distribution depicted in the photo highlight the precision and high-tech capabilities of this airborne observatory. During an eight-hour flight manned by a dedicated crew comprising scientists, engineers, and technicians, SOFIA underwent rigorous testing to ensure its effectiveness as an astronomical research tool. This particular mission also allowed for observations of M82 galaxy alongside Jupiter. The mirror-like interior design adds to the futuristic ambiance surrounding SOFIA's operations onboard Boeing 747SP aircraft. With its landing at Cologne-Porz Airport on September 17th, 2011 marking a significant milestone visit to DLR - its telescope home - SOFIA continues to push boundaries in astrophysics and planetary science. Detlev van Ravenswaay expertly captures both scientific precision and aesthetic allure through his lens in this remarkable photograph that transports viewers into the realm of deep space exploration.
