Kidney capillary, SEM
Kidney capillary. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a fracture through a glomerular capillary. A kidney glomerulus, which filters waste products from the blood, consists of a coiled mass of capillaries surrounded by a capsule. The lumen wall of the glomerular capillaries consists of fenestrated epithelium (yellow), that is epithelium with many pores. These pores, or fenestrae, allow water and small solutes, but not larger molecules, to filter out of the blood into the capsule. After the reabsorption of certain substances elsewhere in the kidney the liquid is transported to the bladder as urine. Magnification: x15, 000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a kidney capillary, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image reveals a fracture through a glomerular capillary, which is an essential component of the kidney's filtration system. The glomerulus, depicted as a coiled mass of capillaries surrounded by a capsule, plays a crucial role in filtering waste products from the blood. Highlighted in yellow is the fenestrated epithelium that lines the lumen wall of these glomerular capillaries. This specialized epithelium contains numerous pores or fenestrae that allow water and small solutes to pass through while preventing larger molecules from escaping into the capsule. This selective filtration process ensures that only necessary substances are filtered out for further processing. After undergoing reabsorption processes elsewhere in the kidney, this filtered liquid eventually becomes urine and is transported to the bladder for elimination from our bodies. With its false-colored presentation and magnification level of x15,000 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this SEM image provides us with an extraordinary glimpse into one aspect of our complex urinary system. This photograph not only highlights the incredible biological structures within our kidneys but also serves as a reminder of their vital function in maintaining homeostasis within our bodies.
