Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, Russian physicist, born Izhevsk, Ryazan, September 17 1857, died Moscow, September 19, 1935. Handicapped by deafness & the inadequacies of education in Tsarist Russia, Tsiolkovsky was self-educated in chemistry and physics. In 1881 he worked out the kinetic theory of gases, unaware that Maxwell had done so a decade earlier. 1895 saw the beginnings of his interest in space flight. His reputation as a pioneer of space travel rests on a series of magazine articles in 1903 on the theory of rocketry, anticipating some of the devices that Goddard was to develop. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind and indomitable spirit of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, a renowned Russian physicist. Born in Izhevsk, Ryazan on September 17,1857, Tsiolkovsky faced numerous challenges throughout his life. Handicapped by deafness and hindered by the inadequacies of education in Tsarist Russia, he defied all odds to become a self-taught expert in chemistry and physics. In 1881, Tsiolkovsky independently developed the kinetic theory of gases without knowledge of Maxwell's earlier work. However, it was his fascination with space flight that truly defined his legacy. As early as 1895, he began exploring this uncharted territory. Tsiolkovsky's visionary ideas on rocketry were published in a series of groundbreaking magazine articles in 1903. Little did he know that these concepts would foreshadow some of the very devices later developed by Goddard himself. His imagination knew no bounds as he envisioned not only rockets but also space suits, satellites, and even space stations. This portrait captures the essence of a true pioneer whose contributions to space travel continue to inspire generations today. With this remarkable image from Science Photo Library adorning your walls or collection, you are reminded daily of Tsiolkovsky's unwavering determination and extraordinary achievements – an enduring testament to human ingenuity reaching for the stars.
