EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the stunning beauty of Lake Rotomahana in New Zealand, with Mount Tarawera majestically towering in the background. The image was taken during the renowned voyage of HMS Challenger between 1872 and 1876, a groundbreaking scientific expedition organized by the Royal Society. Equipped with a dark room on board, this expedition marked one of the first instances where routine photography was incorporated into an exploration mission. The photograph showcases not only the natural splendor of New Zealand's landscape but also provides valuable insights into its geology and geomorphology. The volcanic nature of the region is evident through both the imposing presence of Mount Tarawera and the surrounding hot springs that dot Lake Rotomahana's shores. As part of their four-year surveying journey across oceans worldwide, HMS Challenger aimed to document lands and peoples encountered along their route. This particular image serves as a testament to their commitment to capturing these moments visually, alongside having an official artist on board. Preserved in black and white monochrome, this historical snapshot offers us a glimpse into New Zealand's past while showcasing its timeless allure. Thanks to institutions like Natural History Museum, London/Science Photo Library, we can continue to appreciate and study these remarkable images from significant scientific expeditions like that undertaken by HMS Challenger over a century ago.
