Very Large Array (VLA) radio antennae at dusk

Very Large Array antennae. View at dusk of a row of several dish antennae which make up the Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope near Socorro, New Mexico, USA. The VLA is the worlds largest radio telescope array, consisting of 27 dish antennae, each 25 metres in diameter. The total weight of each antenna is 235 tonnes. The dishes can be moved to various positions along the arms of a Y- shaped railway network. Two of the arms are 21 km in length, the third is 19 km. The data from all the dishes can be combined using interferometry techniques to produce a single finest-detail radio image, the 27 antennae forming one giant 27 kilometre radio dish

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring Very Large Array (VLA) radio antennae at dusk, standing tall against the darkening sky. Located near Socorro, New Mexico, USA, these impressive dish antennae form the world's largest radio telescope array. With a total of 27 dishes, each boasting a massive diameter of 25 meters and weighing an astounding 235 tonnes, this technological marvel pushes the boundaries of astrophysics. The VLA's design allows for remarkable flexibility and precision in observing celestial objects. The dishes can be maneuvered along a Y-shaped railway network spanning over three arms measuring up to 21 kilometers in length. This intricate system enables astronomers to capture data from various positions and combine it using interferometry techniques. Through this groundbreaking method, these seemingly separate antennas transform into one colossal 27-kilometer radio dish capable of producing incredibly detailed images of distant cosmic phenomena. It is through such advancements that our understanding of the universe expands exponentially. As we gaze upon this breathtaking image bathed in dusky hues, we are reminded not only of humanity's insatiable curiosity but also its relentless pursuit to unravel the mysteries hidden within our vast cosmos. Science Photo Library has expertly captured this momentous scientific achievement while preserving its artistic beauty for all to admire and contemplate.
