Leonid meteor

Leonid meteor. Optical time-exposure image of a Leonid meteor (white diagonal line, lower centre) and star trails (curved tracks). Meteors, or shooting stars, are tiny particles of dust which enter the Earths atmosphere at high speeds. Air resistance heats the particles, making them visible as streaks of light. The Leonid meteor shower occurs annually for about 2 days around 17th November, when the Earth crosses the path of debris produced by the comet Tempel-Tuttle (55P). Star trails are produced on long-exposure photographs by the apparent motion of the stars caused by the Earths rotation

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing beauty of a Leonid meteor streaking across the night sky. The white diagonal line, elegantly contrasting against the dark backdrop, represents the fleeting moment when a tiny particle of dust from outer space enters Earth's atmosphere at incredible speeds. As air resistance heats up these particles, they become visible as luminous streaks of light known as shooting stars. The image also showcases star trails, gracefully curved tracks caused by the apparent motion of stars due to our planet's rotation. These ethereal trails add a sense of dynamism and timelessness to the composition, reminding us of the vastness and constant movement in our universe. The Leonid meteor shower is an annual celestial event that occurs for approximately two days around November 17th. During this period, Earth crosses paths with debris left behind by Comet Tempel-Tuttle (55P), resulting in an increased number of meteors visible to observers on Earth. This cosmic spectacle has fascinated astronomers and stargazers for centuries. As we gaze upon this stunning photograph captured through optical time-exposure techniques, we are reminded of both the periodicity and unpredictability inherent in our cosmos. It serves as a reminder that even amidst chaos and uncertainty, there is immense beauty waiting to be discovered above us in the night sky.
