Leopard flounder

Leopard flounder (Bothus pantherinus) camouflaged on the seabed. When the leopard flounder is born it has an eye on each side of its body and swims upright. However, as it matures, its right eye migrates to the left side and the flounder begins to swim sideways. The flounder, which grows to about 35 centimetres in length, is able to change its colour to some extent to match its surroundings. This fish is found on the sandy bottoms of coastal coral reefs and lagoons in the Indo-Pacific. It often buries itself in the sand, leaving only its eyes exposed. From this position the fish will jump out on its prey, crustaceans and small fish. Photographed in Bunaken, Sulawesi, Indonesia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the incredible camouflage abilities of the Leopard flounder (Bothus pantherinus) as it seamlessly blends into its seabed surroundings. The leopard flounder, a fascinating creature found in the Indo-Pacific region, undergoes a remarkable transformation as it matures. Initially born with eyes on both sides of its body and swimming upright, this flat fish gradually shifts one eye to the opposite side and begins to swim sideways. Measuring up to 35 centimeters in length, this elusive predator possesses an extraordinary ability to change its coloration to match its environment. It prefers sandy bottoms within coastal coral reefs and lagoons where it skillfully buries itself beneath the sand, leaving only its watchful eyes exposed. From this hidden position, the leopard flounder patiently waits for unsuspecting prey such as crustaceans and small fish before swiftly pouncing upon them. Captured off the shores of Bunaken in Sulawesi, Indonesia by Science Photo Library, this image beautifully captures nature's mastery of deception. With intricate details showcasing every aspect of this zoological wonder—from its mesmerizing pattern resembling spots like those on a leopard's coat to its perfectly adapted eyes—this photograph offers us a glimpse into the hidden world beneath our oceans' depths. Immerse yourself in awe-inspiring marine life with this stunning portrayal that highlights not only the beauty but also sheds light on intriguing biological adaptations that enable survival against all odds.
