Lime tree stem, light micrograph

Lime tree stem. Light micrograph of a section through the stem of a lime tree (Tilia europaea). The outer epidermis has been shed and replaced by a layer of cork (dark red). Under the cork is the outer cortex layer of flexible collenchyma tissue (dark blue and red) and a lower cortex of parenchyma (blue). Next is a ring of phloem (blue) with large sieve tubes, companion cells and fibres (pink). The phloem is broken by primary medullary rays (blue, triangular) and thin subsidiary medullary rays (dark blue). Next is a ring of xylem (pink) with large files of vessels and small woody parenchyma (light blue). The primary xylem (dark blue) and the central pith of parenchyma tissue (light blue) are also shown. Magnification: x5 when printed 10 centimetres

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate structure of a lime tree stem, as seen through a light micrograph. The image reveals the various layers and tissues that make up this botanical wonder. Starting from the outermost layer, we observe the cork, depicted in a dark red hue, which has replaced the shed epidermis. Just beneath lies the flexible collenchyma tissue, portrayed in shades of dark blue and red. Further down is the lower cortex composed of parenchyma cells shown in a vibrant blue color. Moving inward, we encounter a ring of phloem characterized by its striking blue shade. Within this phloem layer are large sieve tubes along with companion cells and fibers depicted in pink tones. Interestingly, primary medullary rays can be observed breaking through this phloem ring in triangular shapes while thin subsidiary medullary rays appear darker blue. Continuing our journey into the stem's core, we find ourselves surrounded by xylem tissue represented by an elegant pink hue. This xylem layer contains files of vessels and small woody parenchyma cells displayed in light blue shades. Additionally, both primary xylem (dark blue) and central pith made up of parenchyma tissue (light blue) are visible within this section. The level of detail captured within this print allows us to appreciate not only the beauty but also understand better how these different cell structures work together to support plant growth and development.
