LM of brain tissue affected by Alzheimers disease

Alzheimers disease brain tissue. Light micrograph of a section through the brain of a person with Alzheimers disease. Amyloid plaques (dark brown clumps such as at upper right and lower centre) are characteristic of this disease. Other typical features are neurofibrillary tangles (not seen), masses of thickened filaments in the cytoplasm of nerve cells. The plaques and tangles disrupt the normal functioning of the brain, causing a form of dementia with memory loss, confusion and a loss of coordination. There is no cure, and death occurs after several years of decline. Magnification: x200 at 5x7cm size. For a light micrograph of healthy brain tissue see image P360/212

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a light micrograph of brain tissue affected by Alzheimer's disease. The devastating impact of this condition is evident through the presence of dark brown clumps known as amyloid plaques, which are prominently displayed in the upper right and lower center areas of the image. These plaques, along with neurofibrillary tangles that are not visible here, disrupt the normal functioning of the brain. Alzheimer's disease leads to a form of dementia characterized by memory loss, confusion, and a loss of coordination. Sadly, there is currently no cure for this debilitating disorder. As time progresses, individuals experience a gradual decline in their cognitive abilities until death occurs after several years. The magnification used for this light micrograph is x200 at 5x7cm size, allowing us to observe intricate details within the affected brain tissue. It serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for advancements in medical research and treatment options to combat Alzheimer's disease. It is important to note that this image should not be associated with any specific company or commercial use. Instead, it serves as an informative visual aid provided by Science Photo Library to enhance our understanding of this distressing neurological condition and its impact on human health care.
