LM of cross-section of artery with atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis. Light micrograph of a cross section through an artery obstructed with atheroma plaque. The disease is known as atherosclerosis. At right is the lumen (artery cavity) filled with blood cells. Bordering the lumen (at centre) is a fibrous and fatty deposit of plaque on the arterial wall. The artery wall endothelium is the thick wavy line (at left, dark red) and beneath it the tunica media of elastic fibres and muscle cells. Atherosclerosis, the thickening of the artery walls mainly due to a fatty diet high in cholesterol, may result in clot formation or severe artery blockage which can lead to heart attack. Magnification: x64 at 35mm size. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © PASIEKA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a cross-section of an artery affected by atherosclerosis, a common and potentially dangerous condition. The image reveals the intricate details of this disease, providing valuable insight into its impact on our cardiovascular health. In the center of the photo, we observe the lumen, which is filled with blood cells flowing through the artery. However, surrounding this vital pathway are visible signs of trouble. A fibrous and fatty deposit known as plaque clings to the arterial wall, obstructing proper blood flow. This plaque formation can lead to severe blockages or even clot formation that may result in life-threatening conditions like heart attacks. The dark red line on the left represents the artery wall's endothelium - a thick wavy layer responsible for protecting and maintaining vascular function. Beneath it lies another crucial component called tunica media, composed of elastic fibers and muscle cells that provide structural support to arteries. Atherosclerosis primarily develops due to diets high in cholesterol and unhealthy lifestyle choices. This image serves as a reminder of how these factors contribute to thickening artery walls over time. With its magnification at x64 size captured using light micrograph technology, this photograph offers healthcare professionals invaluable visual references for studying and understanding various aspects related to atheroma plaques within arterial systems.
