LM of a cross-section through the human oesophagus

Oesophagus. Light micrograph of a cross-section through the human oesophagus. The oesophagus forms a tube which passes food from the mouth to the stomach. Its lumen (inner cavity, at centre) is lined by a thick, protective stratified squamous epithelium (dark blue). This is folded to allow the wall to stretch. Beneath the epithelium lies a lamina propria layer (light blue) containing lymphoid tissue (dark patches). Beneath the lamina propria are two thick layers of muscle (mauve): an inner circular muscle layer, and an outer layer of longitudinal muscle. These muscle layers cause peristaltic contractions to move food along to the stomach. Magnification: x4 at 6x6cm size

Digestion Digestive System Epithelium Oesophagus Light Micrograph

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a cross-section of the human oesophagus, providing a glimpse into the intricate workings of our digestive system. The oesophagus, acting as a conduit between the mouth and stomach, is depicted here in all its glory. At the center lies its lumen, an inner cavity that facilitates the passage of food. To ensure protection from external factors, this lumen is lined with a robust stratified squamous epithelium, beautifully illustrated in dark blue hues. The remarkable adaptability of the oesophageal wall is revealed through its folded structure, allowing for stretching when necessary. Just beneath this resilient lining rests the lamina propria layer portrayed in light blue shades. Within it resides lymphoid tissue represented by intriguing dark patches. Delving deeper into this microcosm of biological marvels unveils two muscular layers painted mauve: an inner circular muscle layer and an outer longitudinal muscle layer. These muscles work harmoniously to generate peristaltic contractions responsible for propelling food along its journey towards digestion within the stomach. With a magnification factor of x4 at 6x6cm size, this photograph captures both scientific precision and artistic beauty simultaneously. It serves as a testament to our ever-evolving understanding of human anatomy while emphasizing how interconnected systems contribute to our overall well-being—truly showcasing nature's ingenuity at every level.
