LM of frogspawn of the European edible frog

Frog spawn. Light micrograph of freshly-laid eggs (frog spawn) of the European edible frog, Rana temporaria. The dark circle at the centre of each egg is the developing embryo. R. temporaria lays its eggs in ponds during February and March in lowland areas and as late as June in the mountains. The spawning season in any one area is restricted to a period of one to three nights R. temporaria eggs are amongst the first frog spawn to hatch; the tadpoles feed on the frog spawn of other species. They metamorphosize into the adult form in two to three months, before migrating to damp woods and meadows. Magnification: x1.5 at 35mm size & x3 at 5x7cm size

Amphibian Eggs Frog Frog Spawn Rana Temporaria Edible Frog Light Micrograph

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of frogspawn belonging to the European edible frog, Rana temporaria. Under the lens of a light micrograph, we are granted a close-up view of freshly-laid eggs glistening in a pond. Each egg is adorned with a dark circle at its core, representing the developing embryo within. R. temporaria follows a specific breeding pattern, laying its eggs during February and March in lowland regions and even as late as June in mountainous areas. The spawning season is short-lived, lasting only one to three nights in any given location. Interestingly, these eggs are among the first to hatch amongst various species of frogs. Once hatched, tadpoles emerge from their protective shells and begin feeding on other frog spawn present in their surroundings. Over two to three months, they undergo an incredible metamorphosis into their adult form before embarking on a journey towards damp woods and meadows. The magnified image reveals intricate details that would otherwise go unnoticed by our naked eyes. With a magnification factor of x1.5 at 35mm size or x3 at 5x7cm size, this photograph allows us to appreciate nature's wonders up close. This stunning visual representation serves as an ode to wildlife enthusiasts and those fascinated by zoology alike – offering insight into amphibian life cycles while showcasing the delicate beauty found within nature's creations.
